TORONTO, April 27 (UPI) -- Mike Lowell coaxed a tie-breaking bases loaded walk in the eighth inning Tuesday and the Boston Red Sox edged Toronto 2-1.

With the score tied 1-1, Dustin Pedroia and Victor Martinez got one-out singles off reliever Scott Downs (0-3). One out later, J.D. Drew walked to load the bases.

Kevin Gregg came on to pitch, and Lowell, pinch-hitting for David Ortiz, drew a base on balls to plate Pedroia with the go-ahead run.

Ramon Ramirez made the lead hold up by pitching a scoreless ninth for his first save. Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz (2-2) earned the victory, scattering seven hits over eight innings, allowing only one run and striking out four.

Toronto was led by Vernon Wells, who finished 2-for-4 and drove in the Blue Jays' only run.

Toronto starter Shaun Marcum allowed one run on four hits over seven innings.
