MONTREAL, April 26 (UPI) -- Jaroslav Halak stopped 53 shots Monday as Montreal defeated Washington 4-1 to force a decisive seventh game in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.
Halak made 22 of his saves in the final period as the Capitals mounted a desperation drive to prevent a loss and necessitate a winner-take-all seventh game, slated for Wednesday in Washington.
Michael Cammalleri scored two goals and Maxim Lapierre got a third-period insurance goal for the eighth-seeded Canadiens, who have bounced back from a 3-games-to-1 deficit.
Montreal was the last NHL team to do win a series after being down 3-1, when they rallied to defeat Boston in the first round of the 2004 post-season.
Eric Fehr ruined Halak's shutout bid by getting Washington's only goal with 4:50 left in regulation.
Caps superstar Alex Ovechkin got off eight shots in the contest but couldn't find the net while Washington was 0-for-6 on the power play.
