LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 26 (UPI) -- Horse owner John Greathouse said Monday he will enter filly Devil May Care in this weekend's 136th Kentucky Derby.
Greathouse said he made the unusual decision to enter a filly in Saturday's race after heavily favored Eskendereya was scratched due to a leg injury and jockey John Velazquez became available, USA Today reported.
"When (Eskendereya) comes out and I can get the rider I want, I have no reason not to run," Greathouse told reporters, adding, "She's sitting on a huge race."
The newspaper said Eskendereya and Devil May Care trainer Todd Pletcher, who is winless with 24 Kentucky Derby starts, has taken a Triple Crown race with a filly before when Rags to Riches defeated Curlin in a 2007 duel at the Belmont Stakes.
Some 39 fillies have competed in the Kentucky Derby but only only three have won: Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980) and Winning Colors (1988).
