BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 24 (UPI) -- American Melanie Oudin and Russian Elena Dementieva won Saturday to produce a split in the best-of-five Fed Cup semifinal in Birmingham, Ala.
Oudin rebounded after going down 3-1 in the first set to bounce Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-3 in one match, while Dementieva countered by posting a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Bethanie Mattek-Sands at the indoor hard courts of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Arena.
Saturday's results mean the 18-year-old Oudin will face Dementieva in Sunday's reverse singles. The Russian will be looking to avenge a stunning loss Oudin handed the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the quarterfinals of the 2009 U.S. Open.
Mattek-Sands will face Kudryavtseva in the other singles match, while the Day 2 doubles rubber will likely see the American duo of Liezel Huber and Mattek-Sands taking on the Russian team of Dementieva and Ekaterina Makarova.
