Cheruiyot sets Boston Marathon record

BOSTON, April 19 (UPI) -- Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot won the 114th Boston Marathon Monday in record time and by more than 1 1/2 minutes.

Cheruiyot, 21, was clocked in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 51 seconds, a course record 83 seconds faster than the marker set in 2006 by the similarly named but unrelated Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot, who won the race four times.

The 2010 champion Cheruiyot finished 92 seconds ahead of Ethiopian Tekeste Kebede (2:07:23) and Deriba Merga, who won last year's race, was third in 2:08:39. Ryan Hall was fourth and his time of 2:08:41 was the best ever for an American runner in the Boston Marathon.

Cheruiyot collected $150,000 for the marathon and $25,000 for setting a course record.

Ethiopian Teyba Erkesso won the women's race in 2:26:11 with Russian Tatyana Pushkareva second just 3 seconds back. Last year's women's winner, Salina Kosgei, was third in 2:28.35.

South African Ernst Van Dyk won the wheelchair classification of the marathon, completing the course in 1:26:53, 4 seconds ahead of American Krige Schabort. It was Van Dyk's third consecutive Boston Marathon win and ninth in the last 10 years.
