NBA: Dallas 100, San Antonio 94

DALLAS, April 18 (UPI) -- Dirk Nowitzki scored 36 points Sunday and the Dallas Mavericks beat San Antonio 100-94 in Game 1 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Nowitzki was 12-of-14 from the field and 12-of-12 from the foul line. Jason Kidd finished with 13 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, while Caron Butler scored 22 points and Brendan Haywood added 12 for Dallas, which is appearing in a franchise-record 10th straight playoffs.

The Spurs -- who are appearing in an NBA-record 13th straight post-season -- got 27 points from Tim Duncan and 26 from Manu Ginobili. Tony Parker scored 18 and Antonio McDyess had 10 points and eight boards.

Dallas scored 20 points off of 17 San Antonio turnovers.
