Redskins RB Portis cleared for mini-camp

WASHINGTON, April 17 (UPI) -- Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis has gained medical clearance to attend the team's mini-camp, the team said Saturday.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen said Portis, who suffered a concussion in Game 9 last season and missed the rest of the season, has been cleared for contact at the team's first voluntary mini-camp this weekend, The Washington Post reported.

"We were able to get some of the best medical experts across the country to analyze him, and he's been cleared for practice," Allen told the Post. "It's really a patient ... you have to be patient with a head injury. That's one of the commonsense lessons you're going to learn. It's patience."

Portis gained a career-low 494 yards last season and reported vision problems after the concussion. This year he will compete with veteran running backs Larry Johnson and Willie Parker for a spot in the backfield, the newspaper said.
