BUFFALO, N.Y., April 15 (UPI) -- Ryan Miller stopped 38 shots Thursday and the Buffalo Sabres opened the playoffs with a 2-1 victory over Boston.

Craig Rivet snapped a 1-1 tie with 5:50 remaining in the second period and Miller, goaltender for the silver medal-winning United States team at this year's Olympics, was perfect the rest of the way.

The Sabres will try for a two-game lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series when they host the next contest Saturday.

Thomas Vanek scored 4:52 into the game for the Sabres and Mark Recchi tied it on the power play midway through the second.

Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots for the Bruins. Rask went to the bench with 90 seconds to play in the third period, but Boston's hopes were all but wiped out when Zdeno Chara was called for hooking in the final minute.

This is the eighth playoff series between the teams and Boston has won five of the first seven.
