MILWAUKEE, April 8 (UPI) -- The Milwaukee Brewers said Thursday they have locked up right-hander Yovani Gallardo through the 2014 season with an option for a sixth year.

The team didn't say how much the 24-year-old native of Mexico will be paid during the five-year contract. But MSNBC reported online the deal will pay Gallardo $30.1 million for the five years with a $13 million option for 2015.

Gallardo was Milwaukee's Opening Day starter Monday, going seven innings in a 5-3 loss to Colorado.

"We are thrilled to sign one of our top young players to a long-term deal," said Doug Melvin, the Brewers' executive vice president and general manager. "We view Yovani as a top of the rotation performer who has a chance to become one of the elite pitchers in the game. He is the cornerstone of our starting rotation and the ideal pitcher to build our staff around for future seasons."

Gallardo went 13-12 with a 3.73 earned-run average in 30 starts last year. He missed most of the 2008 season with a knee injury after a 9-5 rookie season in 2007.

Milwaukee selected him in the second round of the 2004 draft.
