STORRS, Conn., April 7 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama Wednesday congratulated the University of Connecticut women's basketball team on its NCAA Tournament victory.

Obama called Huskies team members and Coach Geno Auriemma from the Oval Office to register his admiration for their second straight NCAA championship, achieved Tuesday in a 53-47 victory over Stanford, the White House said.

UConn's win completed a second straight undefeated season and ran its unbeaten streak to 78 games.

Administration officials said Obama commended Auriemma and the team on their achievement, adding he was looking forward to seeing all of them at the White House again soon.

The team was greeted by 1,000 fans who gathered at Gampel Pavilion on the university campus in Storrs, Conn., The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported.

UConn President Michael Hogan, Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway, Auriemma and Final Four MVP Maya Moore spoke during the 20-minute rally.

Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell and about 300 fans gathered earlier at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Conn., to greet the team's flight from San Antonio, where the Final Four was played.
