ANAHEIM, Calif., April 7 (UPI) -- Joe Mauer homered and Jon Rauch stepped into the closer's role Tuesday to help lead the Minnesota Twins past the Los Angeles Angels 5-3.
Rauch pitched a perfect ninth inning and earned a save as a replacement for Joe Nathan, who will miss the entire season due to ligament replacement surgery.
Rauch preserved the win for Nick Blackburn (1-0), who allowed three runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Torii Hunter led the Angels with a two-run homer and three RBI. Joe Saunders (0-1) gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings.
Minnesota took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Mauer's two-run shot to center field and a subsequent bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Delmon Young.
Justin Morneau's leadoff home run in the third widened the Twins' lead to 4-0. After Hunter drove in a run with a single in the bottom half of the inning, J.J. Hardy connected for a solo home run in the fourth.
Hunter's homer in the fifth made it 5-3 but the Halos failed to generate any base runners the rest of the way.
