Floyd won't return for this year's Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga., April 6 (UPI) -- U.S. golfer Ray Floyd said Tuesday he is retiring from golf and won't compete in this year's Masters tournament.

Floyd, 67, won the 1976 Masters when he matched Jack Nicklaus' tournament-record 17-under 271 -- a mark that stood until Tiger Woods' victory in 1997. Floyd said Tuesday that last year's effort at the Augusta National Country Club was his last.

"Last year was my last Masters," Floyd said. "I'm not competing this year. It's something I toyed with pretty much all year as to whether I would play or not."

Floyd said age was a factor in his decision.

"I just feel I have so many fond, special memories here, and I didn't feel like I embarrassed myself, but it's getting to that stage," he said. "I'm 67 years old."

The last time Floyd made the cut at August was in 1999.

In addition to his 1976 win, he was co-runner-up in 1985 and performed well at the event into his late 40s. At age 47 in 1990, he forced a playoff with Nick Faldo but lost when he hit his approach shot into the water.
