DURHAM, N.C., April 6 (UPI) -- Thousands of Duke University fans packed Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C., Tuesday to welcome home the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament champions.
The stadium quickly filled with fans after the doors opened at noon EDT. Many of those fans had been in the arena Monday night to watch on television as the Blue Devils downed Butler 61-59 in Indianapolis to win the title, The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer reported.
The newspaper said the team and head Coach Mike Krzyzewski entered the arena at 2:15 after being taken there by bus from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
"We won the national championship," Krzyzewski told the screaming fans. "It's good to be home, good to be back in Cameron."
"This is the best team I'll ever play on in my life," added senior Lance Thomas, while junior Kyle Singler -- named the Final Four's most outstanding player -- said, "Enjoy it! Just have fun."
The News & Observer said those in the crowd included students, alumni and families with small children whose faces were painted blue to honor Duke's colors.
