Pavlyuchenkova wins in opening round

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla., April 5 (UPI) -- Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, one month removed from her first professional title, was among the first-round winners Monday at the MPS Group Championships.

Pavlyuchenkova, 18 and seeded fifth in this event, defeated Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 on the clay courts of the Sawgrass Country Club.

Third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Melinda Czink and No. 6 seed Aleksandra Wozniak breezed past Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-3.

Wozniak was the runner-up in this tournament a year ago against Caroline Wozniacki, who is the top seed this year.

In other first-round matches, Alla Kudryavtseva defeated Jill Craybas 6-1, 6-4 and Sofia Arvidsson crushed Carly Gullickson 6-0, 6-2.
