Dan Hurley named Wagner basketball coach

NEW YORK, April 5 (UPI) -- Dan Hurley, a longtime high school coach and a former assistant at Rutgers, has been named basketball coach of the NCAA Division 1 Wagner Seahawks.

Hurley succeeds Mike Deane, who coached the team for seven years. Wagner had a 5-26 record this season.

Wagner College is in the New York borough of Staten Island.

"We are excited to welcome Dan Hurley into the Wagner athletics family," Athletic Director Walt Hameline said. "Dan has been a winner at every level that he has played or coached and is someone who has thrived at schools that have excellent academic reputations."

The 37-year-old Hurley coached the past nine years at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J., leading the team to an overall record of 223-21. Four of his teams were ranked among the Top 5 in the country.

Hurley was an assistant at Rutgers for four seasons, 1997 through 2001. He is the son of Bob Hurley, who was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame as a high school coach, and the brother of Bobby Hurley, a former star at Duke.
