CALGARY, Alberta, April 1 (UPI) -- Miikka Kiprusoff made 29 saves Wednesday and Calgary gave its playoff chances a large lift by holding off Phoenix 2-1.
Calgary moved within two points of struggling Colorado for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference and those teams will meet on Friday.
Rene Bourque scored in the second period and Ales Kotalik gave Calgary a 2-0 lead 3:46 into the third.
Kiprusoff's bid for a shutout was halted when Lee Stempniak scored on a wrist shot with 6:52 to play. Kiprusoff, however, hung on to record his 34th victory of the season.
Phoenix lost for the fourth time in five games and missed out on a chance to gain ground on division and conference-leading San Jose. Phoenix, which has set a franchise record with 100 points, trails the Sharks by four in the Pacific Division.
Jason LaBarbera stopped 29-of-31 shots to take the loss.
The teams split their four games, the home team winning on each occasion.
