MONTREAL, March 31 (UPI) -- Cam Ward made 34 saves and Eric Staal netted a third-period goal Wednesday, lifting the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 win over Montreal.

Staal's game-winner came less than three minutes into the final stanza on assists from Erik Cole and Ray Whitney.

Brandon Sutter potted the other Carolina score as the Hurricanes won for the third time in four games.

Marc-Andre Bergeron got Montreal's only goal on a power play as the Habs dropped their fifth game in six contests.

Montreal remained tied with Philadelphia and Boston for the last three playoff spots in the Eastern Conference, while Atlanta trailed the trio by just two points.
