NEW YORK, March 31 (UPI) -- Deon Thompson scored 16 points Tuesday to lead North Carolina into the NIT championship game with a 68-67 overtime win over Rhode Island.
Thompson also pulled down 13 rebounds for the Tar Heels, who will face Dayton in Thursday's title game at Madison Square Garden.
A victory would give North Carolina an NIT title one year after they won the NCAA championship.
Will Graves scored 14 points for North Carolina and Tyler Zeller scored 12.
Keith Cothran led Rhode Island with 23 points and eight rebounds. Lamonte Ulmer added 16 points.
North Carolina got a decisive break in the closing seconds of overtime when the officials failed to call a foul after Ulmer grabbed a rebound and then appeared to be tripped inadvertently by a Tar Heels player as he started up the court. Ulmer lost the ball to Carolina on the play.
