
HOUSTON, March 28 (UPI) -- Nolan Smith and Jon Scheyer combined for 49 points Sunday as top-seeded Duke defeated Baylor 78-71 in the NCAA Tournament South Region final.
Smith poured in 29 points and Scheyer added 20 -- including 14 in the second half -- to power the Blue Devils (33-5) into the Final Four. Duke was participating in its first Elite Eight since 2004 and has not claimed the national title since 2001.
The Blue Devils will face No. 2 seed West Virginia Saturday in the tournament semifinals in Indianapolis. The Mountaineers downed Kentucky 73-66 Saturday.
Brian Zoubek and Lance Thomas combined to haul down 12 offensive rebounds, enabling Duke to outscore Baylor 23-11 in second-chance points. The Blue Devils were deadly from the free-throw line, going 23-of-29.
The Bears (28-8) were led by LaceDarius Dunn with 22 points and six rebounds while Ekpe Udoh added 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
