DENVER, March 25 (UPI) -- Shootout goals by Peter Mueller and Chris Stewart Wednesday brought Colorado a vital 4-3 win over Los Angeles in a battle of teams fighting for playoff spots.

Colorado remained tied with Detroit for seventh place in the Western Conference and moved four points in front of ninth-place Calgary. Although Los Angeles had to settle for one point, that was enough to move the Kings in front of Nashville for fifth place.

Los Angeles rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period, tying it on scores by Drew Doughty and Alexander Frolov. Both goals were scored on the power play and Frolov's tally came with 1:14 left in regulation.

Mueller scored in the second round of the shootout, but Jack Johnson immediately tied it for the Kings.

Stewart put Colorado back in front and his goal turned out to be the game-winner when Ryan Smyth was unable to put one past Craig Anderson.

Anderson stopped 27-of-30 shots. Jonathan Quick was touched for three goals on 16 shots through two periods before being replaced by Erik Ersberg.

Ersberg made 14 saves in the third period and overtime before giving up the two shootout goals.
