WASHINGTON, March 24 (UPI) -- Mike Knuble's fourth-round shootout goal was the game-winner Wednesday, boosting the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh.
Caps goalie Jose Theodore stopped Chris Kunitz of the Penguins in the top half of the shootout round, and Knuble responded by beating the Penguins' Marc-Andre Fleury with a shot over his shoulder.
Washington entered the third period trailing 2-1, but goals by Alexander Semin and Eric Fehr two minutes apart vaulted the Caps into the lead.
Pittsburgh's Jordan Staal forced the overtime with 3:06 left in regulation when he beat Fleury with a shot to the top left corner of the net.
Theodore finished with 39 saves and improved to 17-0-2 since Jan. 13 as the Caps closed in on the President's Trophy for the best NHL regular season record with 108 points.
Bill Guerin and Maxime Talbot also scored for Pittsburgh, which has posted a 2-3-3 record in its last eight games.
