BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 24 (UPI) -- Deon Thompson had 14 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday to lead North Carolina to a 60-55 win over Alabama-Birmingham in the NIT quarterfinals.
The win sends the Tar Heels to New York, for a semifinal game against the winner of Wednesday's game between Virginia Tech and Rhode Island.
John Henson added 14 points for fourth-seeded Carolina and Larry Drew II scored 11.
Elijah Millsap paced the second-seeded Blazers with 18 points and seven rebounds. Jamarr Sanders scored 17.
Both teams were hampered by cold shooting in the first half, which ended in a 25-25 tie.
UAB remained in a funk in the second half, scoring just eight field goals and going 1-of-9 from 3-point range. North Carolina was equally ineffective from beyond the 3-point line, but outscored UAB in the paint 24-12 and came away with the win.
