NEW YORK, March 23 (UPI) -- The National Hockey League's Board of Governors Tuesday approved a new rule outlawing certain types of hits to the head area.

The NHL released a statement indicating the vote was a unanimous one and makes illegal "a lateral, back-pressure or blind-side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact."

No other details regarding penalties or suspensions were disclosed, but the statement indicated hockey operations officials were negotiating with representatives of the NHL Players' Association to implement the new rule.

The measure comes less than a month after Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard suffered a concussion on a hit from Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke in which Cooke caught an unsuspecting Savard in the head with a shoulder just after the Boston player had fired a shot.

Savard has not returned to the ice and could be out the remainder of the season as well as the playoffs should Boston make the post-season.
