SURPRISE, Ariz., March 23 (UPI) -- Kansas City pitcher Gil Meche's shoulder stiffness is serious enough for the team to start making contingency plans, Manager Trey Hillman said Tuesday.
The Royals are experiencing growing anxiety about their top starting pitcher's health and Hillman conceded it's unlikely he would make his next scheduled spring training start Saturday against Oakland in Surprise, Ariz., The Kansas City Star reported.
"We're going to have to take it day to day and see how his next outing looks," Hillman said. "We'll know more in the next 24-48 (hours)."
Meche, however, told the newspaper the stiffness isn't a major problem, saying, "I just want to make sure I get as flexible as I can."
Hillman said pitcher Kyle Davies would be shifted to a minor-league game Thursday to allow rookie Edgar Osuna to start against Seattle, while Meche's situation would also draw greater attention to Kyle Farnsworth's start Wednesday night against San Francisco, the Star reported.
