
RALEIGH, N.C., March 21 (UPI) -- Jochen Hecht notched a pair of goals Sunday, sparking the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-3 victory over Carolina.
Buffalo exploded for four goals in the second period to nail down the win. Tim Connolly registered a goal and an assist while Toni Lydman and Tim Kennedy each found the net for the Sabres, who picked up their third straight win and tightened their hold on first place in the Northeast Division, where they lead Ottawa and Montreal by nine points.
Ryan Miller turned aside 27 shots in the win.
The Hurricanes got scores from Eric Staal, Sergei Samsonov and Brandon Sutter in the loss.
Justin Peters allowed let in four goals on 14 shots before being yanked in the second period, after which Manny Legace entered and stopped 5-of-6 shots the rest of the way.
