INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 21 (UPI) -- Croatian Ivan Ljubicic claimed the BNP Paribas Open title Sunday, downing American Andy Roddick in two tense sets at Indian Wells, Calif.
Ljubicic was seeded 20th but reached the finals after stunning No. 3 seed and defending champ Rafael Nadal in Saturday's semifinals. He completed his run to the championship by downing Roddick in a hard fought 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) win.
Ljubicic found himself trailing by two games in each set but staged comebacks in both to force extras. The Croatian was aided by 21 aces.
With the Indian Wells win, Ljubicic notched his 10th professional title and became the first Croatian ever to appear in the final or capture the Indian Wells championship. Ljubicic took home $605,500 in prize money and upped his all-time title-match record to 10-12.
Roddick fell to 7-4 all-time against Ljubicic.
