SPOKANE, Wash., March 21 (UPI) -- Korie Lucious' buzzer-beating 3-pointer lifted Michigan State to an 85-83 victory over Maryland in a second-round NCAA Tournament Midwest Region game Sunday.
Maryland had taken an 83-82 lead on a short jumper by Greivis Vasquez with 6.6 seconds left. But Michigan State went the length of the floor and got the ball to Lucious on the right side.
Lucious took it at the top of the arc, pulled up and launched a jumper that found nothing but net as the buzzer sounded, putting the fifth-seeded Spartans (26-8) into the Sweet 16. There they will face No. 9 seed Northern Iowa in the regional semifinals Friday in St. Louis.
Durrell Summers led the Spartans with 26 points while Raymar Morgan added 17 and grabbed 9 rebounds in the win.
Maryland (24-9) got 26 points and 8 assists from Vasquez while Eric Hayes chipped in with 18 in the loss.
