LOS ANGELES, March 20 (UPI) -- Kobe Bryant scored 22 points Friday and the Los Angeles Lakers stumbled to a sluggish 104-96 victory over Minnesota.
The win, combined with Houston's loss to Boston earlier in the night, allowed Los Angeles to become the first team in the Western Conference to officially wrap up a playoff berth.
The Lakers won their fifth straight, but put forth a bland effort against a team that has lost 12 in a row and won just 14 times all season.
Los Angeles made only 41 percent of its shots from the field and Bryant hit just 4-of-11. He did make 13-of-14 foul shots in his team's 51st victory of the campaign.
Minnesota trailed by only two in the latter stages of the third period, but the Lakers produced the final eight points of the quarter and easily held on in the fourth.
Lamar Odom added 18 points for Los Angeles and Pau Gasol had 17.
Minnesota was led by Jonny Flynn with 20.
