OKLAHOMA CITY, March 20 (UPI) -- Ali Farokhmanesh netted a critical 3-pointer late in the game Saturday, helping Northern Iowa shock No. 1 Kansas 69-67 in an NCAA Tournament second-round game.
Farokhmanesh scored 16 points and Jordan Eglseder added 14 points and five rebounds as the Panthers (30-4), seeded ninth in the Midwest Region, upended Kansas, which held the tournament's overall top seed.
With the win, Northern Iowa will make its first-ever appearance in the Sweet 16.
Marcus Morris led the Jayhawks (33-3) with 16 points. The stunning loss represented Kansas' earliest exit from the NCAA Tournament since 2006 when they lost to Bradley in the first round.
The Jayhawks were the favorites to win their second national title in three years.
Before this year, Northern Iowa's only NCAA Tournament win was in 1990 against Missouri.
