JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 20 (UPI) -- Theo Robertson scored five of California's 12 straight points to open the game Friday and the Golden Bears held on for a 77-62 NCAA win over Louisville.
Louisville spent the entire game trying to fight out of its early hole and the Cardinals eventually closed within five with 6:35 to play. California, however, finished the game on a 12-2 run and advanced to the second round for a South Region meeting with top-seeded Duke.
Robertson and Jerome Randle both scored 21 for the Bears, who improved to 24-10 and gave the Pacific-10 Conference a 2-0 record in the tournament's first round. Washington, the only other Pac-10 team in the tournament, upset Marquette on Thursday.
California shot 50 percent from the field and Louisville, which relies heavily on its 3-point shooting, made just 5-of-19 from long range.
Rakeem Buckles led Louisville with 20 points while making 10-of-11 from the field.
The Big East Conference completed the tournament's first round with a 4-4 record.
