BOSTON, March 20 (UPI) -- Pitcher Alan Embree has been signed to a minor league contract by his former club, the Boston Red Sox, the team said Saturday.

Embree, 40, who has played parts of four seasons for the Red Sox, signed a 2010 minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

Embree is best remembered for getting the final out in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS, completing a comeback from a three-game deficit to beat the rival New York Yankees.

Last season he was with Colorado, for whom he made 36 appearances and posted a 5.84 earned run average and 2-2 record. He suffered a fractured right tibia on a batted ball in July, cutting short his season.

Embree has posted a 39-45 record and 4.59 ERA in 882 games over 16 seasons.
