EUGENE, Ore., March 19 (UPI) -- Mike Bellotti announced Friday he was stepping down as athletic director at the University of Oregon and joining ESPN as a college football analyst.
The network said in a written statement that the one-time head coach of the Ducks would make his debut next month on the ESPNU telecast of Auburn's spring scrimmage.
Bellotti, who became athletic director in 2009, called his new job a "once in a lifetime opportunity." He spent 14 seasons as head coach of the Ducks, racking up a 116-55 record with two Pac-10 championships and a dozen bowl appearances.
The (Portland) Oregonian said the ESPN position would free Bellotti from the administrative weight of being an AD and possibly position him for a return to coaching in the near future.
University President Richard Lariviere said in a written statement that a nationwide search for a replacement for Bellotti would be conducted. He said Bellotti would continue to oversee day-to-day operations of the department until next month, after which an interim AD would be appointed.
