MILWAUKEE, March 19 (UPI) -- Jordan Crawford poured in 28 points Friday in leading the sixth-seeded Xavier Musketeers to a 65-54 NCAA tournament first-round victory over Minnesota.
Crawford connected on 11-of-21 shots, hitting five 3-pointers in a win that moved Xavier (25-8) into a second-round game Sunday against third-seeded Pittsburgh, which advanced with an 89-66 triumph over Oakland, in West region play. Minnesota closed the season 21-14.
Xavier broke open a game that was tied at halftime with a Crawford-fueled spurt. Minnesota's Colton Iverson's shot pulled the Golden Gophers within 40-39 with 14:37 to play but Crawford fed Dante Jackson for an open 3-pointer and then dropped in two baskets himself to put Xavier up 47-39 and in control.
Neither team shot very well -- Minnesota was 19-of-62 (30.6 percent) from the field and Xavier, not counting Crawford, was 12-of-46 (26.1 percent).
No other Musketeers joined Crawford in double figures.
The Gophers also had one player in double figures, Lawrence Westbrook, who scored 19 points.
