MILWAUKEE, March 19 (UPI) -- Jermaine Dixon and Gilbert Brown each scored 17 points Friday in No. 3-seeded Pittsburgh's 89-66 NCAA first-round tournament victory over Oakland.
The Panthers (25-8) next battle sixth-seeded Xavier, which dispatched Minnesota 65-54 in its first-round game, in a West Region second-round game Sunday.
The Oakland Golden Grizzles, who got 28 points from Keith Benson and 17 from Ledrick Eackles, saw its season end with a 26-9 record.
Pittsburgh rallied from the sluggish start -- the Panthers had just three Dixon free throws on the board before Brown hit a 3-point shot with 14:17 left in the first half. But quickly heated up and scored 19 of the next 21 points to fashion a 32-20 lead with 3:33 to go.
Dixon had five points in the run but it was a team effort as six of his teammates added points in the span.
Dixon and Brown led a balanced attack that also saw Nasir Robinson (13 points), Brad Wanamaker (13), Gary McGhee (12) and Travon Woodall (10) in double figures.
