SUPRISE, Ariz., March 18 (UPI) -- Texas Manager Ron Washington said Thursday he used marijuana and amphetamines during his Major League playing career in the 1980s.
That admission came one day after he apologized for using cocaine while managing the Rangers last season.
Washington, 57, spent 10 seasons in the majors with five teams. He last played in 1989, when he appeared in seven games with the Houston Astros.
Prior to the Rangers playing an exhibition game with Milwaukee Thursday, Washington made his latest admission. He did not go into details about his drug use.
Washington was allowed to keep his job last year after he tested positive for cocaine. He told club officials it was a one-time usage and completed a drug treatment program without the incident becoming public.
Texas General Manager Jon Daniels said Thursday this latest revelation would not alter the team's support for Washington. Daniels said Washington's use of marijuana took place more than 20 years ago and that he would not be punished for being honest.
In three seasons with the Rangers, Washington's teams have gone 241-245.
