
DENVER, March 18 (UPI) -- Rene Bourque scored twice in helping Calgary to a three-goal lead Wednesday and the Flames held on to defeat Colorado 3-2.
Calgary won for the fifth time in seven games and inched within a point of Detroit for the final post-season spot in the Western Conference.
Bourque opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal 3:12 into the contest and Eric Nystrom tallied in the first period with a backhand shot.
Bourque's second goal, coming on the power play 6:55 into the second, was his 22nd of the season.
Vesa Toskala gave up a goal to Chris Durno with 6:16 to play in the second and did not allow further damage until Milan Hejduk scored on a rebound with just 33 seconds left in the game. Toskala stopped 32 shots.
Colorado had won its previous three games. Craig Anderson took the loss while making 31 saves.
It was the ninth multi-goal game of the season for Bourque.
Calgary defeated Colorado for the first time in five tries this season. All five games have ended with 3-2 scores.
