INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 18 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic, seeking to regain the form that made her the No. 1 player in the world, reached the semifinals Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open.
Jankovic, seeded sixth in this upper tier tournament played at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, eliminated Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-4. Kleybanova won her first WTA Tour championship three weeks ago in Malaysia but lost to Jankovic last month in a Fed Cup match.
Jankovic will appear in her first semifinal in five tournaments this year, when she meets Samantha Stosur, who advanced by defeating Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). This is Stosur's best showing since reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open early in the season.
The other semifinal Friday will send Agnieszka Radwanska against Caroline Wozniacki.
