STONY BROOK, N.Y., March 18 (UPI) -- Demetri McCamey narrowly missed a triple-double Wednesday in leading Illinois to a 76-66 NIT victory over Stony Brook.

Illinois will take on Kent State in the tournament's second round.

Stony Brook won the regular-season title in the America East Conference but fell to Boston University in the semifinals of the league tourney.

The Seawolves (22-10) were given a chance to host the game because of a prior commitment for the home arena of the Illini.

McCamey scored 16 points, dished out 11 assists and grabbed nine rebounds. Mike Davis added 17 points.

Illinois (20-14) failed to receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament after finishing fifth in the Big Ten and then losing a double overtime game to eventual champion Ohio State in the conference semifinals.

Stony Brook (22-10) was led by Bryan Dougher with 21 points.
