SAN JOSE, Calif., March 18 (UPI) -- Shelvin Mack fired a second-half run with four 3-point shots, helping fifth-seeded Butler to a 77-59 NCAA tournament first-round win over Texas-El Paso.

Mack finished with 25 points, with 21 coming on 7-of-9 3-point shooting, while the Bulldogs (29-4) were earning a second-round game Saturday against 13th-seeded Murray State, which upset fourth-seeded Vanderbilt 66-65 earlier Thursday.

UTEP (26-7) led through the first half, taking a 33-27 advantage into halftime. But the Miners scored just four points -- three on a shot by Christian Polk -- over the first 9:44 of the second half. Mack scored 12 points himself in that span, fuelling a 22-4 run that decided the game.

Mack opened the run with back-to-back 3-pointers that tied the score 33-33 and later scored 3-pointers on consecutive Bulldog possessions that made the score 45-37. Butler scored twice more before UTEP was able to break through again.

Gordon Hayward (13 points) and Matt Howard (11) joined Mack in double figures for Butler.

Derrick Caracter, who made 10-of-13 of his field goal attempts, led UTEP with 20 points and nine rebounds. The Miners also got 16 points from Randy Culpepper.
