Polish Olympic skier fails doping test

WARSAW, Poland, March 17 (UPI) -- Polish Olympic cross-country skier Kornelia Marek has been barred from the 2014 Winter Games after failing a second doping test, officials said.

The Polish Olympic Committee said blood taken last Wednesday tested positive for the synthetic hormone EPO, which increases the production of red blood cells, the Rzeczpospolita daily reported Wednesday.

A second test Tuesday also tested positive.

The samples were taken after Marek competed in the 4x5 kilometer relay last month in Vancouver, Canada.

In addition to being banned from the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia, the International Olympic Committee invalidated her results from the Vancouver competition, the newspaper said.
