KINGSTON, R.I., March 17 (UPI) -- Lamonte Ulmer scored 17 points Wednesday as No. 2 seed Rhode Island downed Northwestern 76-64 in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament.
Ulmer led a contingent of four Rams in double figures, including Akeem Richmond with 16 points off the bench, Will Martell with 14 and Delroy James with 12.
Rhode Island (24-9) shot 50 percent from the field and 19-of-28 at the charity stripe in the second half to seal the win. The Rams now advance to face off sixth-seeded Nevada in the second round.
Northwestern (20-14) got 24 points from Michael Thompson while John Shurna contributed 15 and Drew Crawford donated 12 and a hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds in the defeat.
