TEMPE, Ariz., March 17 (UPI) -- Ben Smith's 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds to play Tuesday handed Jacksonville a 67-66 win over top-seeded Arizona State in the National Invitational Tournament.
The stunning upset win sends the Dolphins to a second-round clash with Texas Tech.
The Sun Devils, who had been on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament, failed to hold an 11-point lead in the final 5 minutes and then let a five-point cushion evaporate in the last 20 seconds.
Smith led Jacksonville with 26 points and Ayron Hardy added 11.
The Dolphins pressing defense vexed the Sun Devils much of the game. Arizona State committed 19 turnovers.
Rihards Kuksiks led Arizona State with 21 points, including 16 in the second half. Ty Abbott had 15, but was largely quiet in the second half.
