CHICAGO, March 17 (UPI) -- The Chicago Bears have released veteran cornerback Nathan Vasher, the team said Wednesday.

Vasher, 28, a fourth-round pick by the Bears in 2004, was working on a contract extension signed in 2007 that ran through 2012.

But he has struggled in recent years, hampered by groin and wrist injuries. He appeared in 12 games in 2007-08 and started a career-low two contests in 2009, recording only 13 tackles and one interception.

Vasher's best season with the Bears came in 2005 when he was selected to the Pro Bowl on the strength of eight interceptions in 16 games. The next year he set a then-NFL record for longest play in league history when he returned a missed field goal 108 yards for a touchdown.

The Bears this week signed cornerback Tim Jennings.
