Wozniacki wins, Sharapova out at WTA event

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 15 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki sailed through a third-round victory Sunday at the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in California.

Wozniacki, from Denmark, defeated Maria Kirilenko 6-0, 6-3, winning 60 percent of the points in the match. Wozniacki did face nine break-point situations but lost only one while breaking Kirilenko's serve in four of the Russian's eight service games.

The eight-match card had a pair of upsets with 10th-seeded Maria Sharapova, who committed 14 double faults, falling 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to Zheng Jie and 15th-seeded Francesca Schiavone losing 6-7 (4-6), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 to Aravane Rezai in a match that took nearly 3 hours.

Also Sunday, No. 4-seeded Elena Dementieva topped Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 6-2; fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska routed Gisela Dulko 6-1, 6-0; No. 11-seeded Marion Bartoli took out Jill Craybas 6-2, 6-0; 16th-seeded Nadia Petrova beat Shuai Peng 6-1, 7-5; and wild-card entrant Alicia Molik stopped Elena Baltacha 6-0, 6-2 in a brisk 56 minutes.
