SAN FRANCISCO, March 15 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers Monday signed quarterback David Carr and traded signal-caller Shaun Hill to the Detroit Lions, team officials said.
The 49ers will get an undisclosed 2011 draft choice in exchange for Hill, who has spent the past four seasons with San Francisco.
Carr, a 30-year-old Bakersfield, Calif., native, has been Eli Manning's backup with the New York Giants during the past two seasons. He has also played for Carolina and spent the first five years of his NFL career as the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans.
"We are very happy to add David to our roster," 49ers General Manager Scot McCloughan said. "We added a player at a position of need and of huge importance to us. David provides depth at the quarterback position and helps make us stronger. He's a great young man."
Hill joined San Francisco as a free agent in 2006. He started 16 games and made two other appearances for the 49ers, throwing for 3,490 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
