FORT MYERS, Fla., March 14 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox minor leaguer Ryan Westmoreland will undergo surgery after being diagnosed with a malformation in his brain, the team says.

Red Sox officials said Saturday that Westmoreland, 19, was diagnosed with a cavernous malformation after leaving the team's minor league spring training facility this month.

The procedure will be performed this week by Dr. Robert Spetzler of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.

The Red Sox drafted Westmoreland in the fifth round of the 2008 draft.
