TULSA, Okla., March 13 (UPI) -- Kelvin Lewis scored 28 points Saturday in firing Houston to an 81-73 win over No. 21 Texas-El Paso and into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1992.
Houston (19-15) won four games over four days in winning the Conference USA Tournament and the automatic NCAA Tournament berth that comes with it. The victory ended a 19-year NCAA appearance drought for the Cougars. UTEP (26-6) will also likely be in the tournament bracket when it is announced Sunday.
The Miners led 63-54 with 9:13 to go but Lewis hit two 3-point shots that made it a 1-point game with less than seven minutes left.
A series of free throws put UTEP up 70-66 going in the final four minutes before two Kendrick Washington free throws and 3-point shots from Lewis and Adam Brown gave the Cougars a 74-70 edge.
UTPE managed just one more field goal the rest of the game.
Lewis's 28 points came on 11of-15 shooting, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Aubrey Coleman chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Cougars.
Randy Culpepper score 20 points and Derrick Caracter 18 for UTEP.
