NEW YORK, March 12 (UPI) -- Da'Sean Butler hit a 3-pointer under heavy pressure as time ran out Thursday, giving No. 6 West Virginia a 54-51 Big East quarterfinal victory over Cincinnati.
Butler took the inbounds pass as time was running down and launched an off-balanced attempt over Cincinnati's Lance Stephenson. The ball slammed off the backboard and went through the hoop as the horn sounded.
West Virginia became the only one of the top four tournament seeds to reach the semifinals and will take on Notre Dame Friday.
Notre Dame upset second-seeded Pittsburgh earlier in the evening after Georgetown surprised No. 1 seed Syracuse and Marquette defeated No. 4 seed Villanova in the other quarterfinal matchups.
Cincinnati appeared to have a chance at the win when West Virginia committed a shot clock violation with less than 10 seconds remaining. Dion Dixon brought the ball up for the Bearcats, but he dribbled it off his knee and it went out of bounds to give the Mountaineers the final chance.
West Virginia (25-6) got 17 points from Kevin Jones and Butler had 15. Stephenson scored 19 for the Bearcats (18-15).
