DORAL, Fla., March 11 (UPI) -- Charl Schwartzel was bogey-free in shooting a first-round 5-under-par 67 Thursday and leads the PGA's WGC-CA Championship in Florida.
Schwartzel overcame windy conditions in taking a 1-stroke lead over Robert Allenby, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els, who all shot 68. Six other golfers are at 3-under 69.
Allenby was at 8-under through 14 holes but had four bogeys the rest of the way, including a 5 on the 467-yard, par-4 Blue Monster finishing hole.
Singh had a double-bogey 6 in the final hole and Els a bogey on 18 to leave Schwartzel alone in front.
Schwartzel opened his round on the back nine Thursday and posted birdies at Nos. 11-12. He had six consecutive pars before jumping into the lead with three birdies over Nos. 1-4. Five straight pars completed his bogey-free round.
Schwartzel had back-to-back wins on the European Tour earlier this season, winning the Africa Open and Joburg Open in his native South Africa.
