LOGRONO, Spain, March 4 (UPI) -- Two-time defending Davis Cup champion Spain opens its 2010 tournament with Nicolas Almagro and David Ferrer playing singles matches.
Spain takes an 18-series home winning streak into this weekend's best-of-five Davis Cup first-round matches against Switzerland. The matches in Logrono, Spain, are to be played on a red clay court.
It was a matchup that could have been a headline grabber, but world No. 1 Swiss Roger Federer and Top 14 Spaniards Rafael Nadal, Fernando Verdasco and Juan Carlos Ferrero all bypassed Davis Cup play because of injuries.
Spain will go with the world 16th-ranked Ferrer and No. 40 Almagro for its singles matches and the doubles team of Marcel Granollers and Tommy Robredo.
Almagro drew the first singles match Friday and will go against 19th-ranked Stanislas Wawrinka. Ferrer meets Marco Chiudinelli, ranked 56th, in the nightcap. The Swiss doubles team is expected to be Robredo and Yves Allegro.
The doubles match is set for Saturday with reverse singles Sunday.
The series winner goes to the Davis Cup quarterfinals July 9-11 against either Germany or France.
Spain won the Davis Cup title four times since 2000, including back-to-back championships in 2008-09. Switzerland's best finish was as runner-up in 1992.
